Residents of Park Forest will soon have access to a new Tool Lending Library, set to open on September 27 at the Discovery Center Room, adjacent to the Park Forest Aqua Center at 30 N. Orchard Drive. The program is designed to provide free access to a range of household and garden tools every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.
Village officials say the initiative is intended to help residents complete do-it-yourself projects without having to purchase expensive equipment. The lending library also supports the Village’s broader goals related to sustainability and community engagement.
“This is really about neighbors helping neighbors,” said Carrie Malfeo, Park Forest’s sustainability coordinator. “By sharing tools, we’re reducing waste, saving money, and giving residents the opportunity to take pride in their homes and yards. A tool library is a small idea that can create significant change.”
The project has faced delays in recent years due to challenges in recruiting enough volunteers. According to organizers, a group of dedicated residents has now stepped forward and completed training sessions in preparation for the launch.
“The library will only succeed if the community embraces it,” Malfeo stated. “We’re fortunate to have committed volunteers, but we’re always looking for more help to ensure it operates smoothly.”
The initial inventory features tools purchased by the Village’s Sustainability Office and Environment Commission. Officials expect that as residents and community partners donate gently used or new equipment, the collection will grow.
Organizers hope that the Tool Lending Library will address several needs: providing occasional-use tools for residents, encouraging resource reuse, and promoting community involvement through shared participation.
“Not everyone needs to buy a power drill or a hedge trimmer,” Malfeo explained. “This library allows every resident to tackle projects, big or small, while also reducing clutter and consumption. It benefits everyone financially, positively impacts the environment, and enhances the Park Forest community.”
The grand opening event is open to all members of the public. Staff and volunteers will be present to explain how the program works and how residents can participate.
