The Village of Peotone has released updated guidelines regarding the management of bee and wasp nests within its jurisdiction.
According to the new rules, any nests found on property owned by the Village—including sidewalks, streets, and buildings—will be inspected by Public Works. If a nest in a public area is deemed hazardous, it will be removed either by Public Works staff or a licensed contractor.
For nests located on private property, removal is the responsibility of the property owner. The Village clarified that it will not remove nests from private properties.
In cases where a nest is identified as honeybees, Public Works will attempt to contact a local beekeeper for safe relocation rather than extermination.
Residents are encouraged to report any nests found on Village property to Village Hall or directly to the Public Works Department, providing an exact location for prompt response.
The Village also emphasized that residents should not try to remove nests from public areas themselves. Only trained staff or licensed pest control companies are authorized to handle nest removal on Village property.
