As the new school year begins, the Park Forest Police Department is increasing patrols to address unsafe driving around school buses. Officers will focus on enforcing traffic laws to help ensure student safety as classes resume in Rich Township High School District 22 and Park Forest–Chicago Heights School District 163.

Deputy Chief Kristopher Vallow of the Park Forest Police Department said officers will be monitoring roads closely over the next several weeks. “Starting this week, our dedicated officers will be out in full force, working tirelessly to enhance road safety in Park Forest. They will focus on enforcing occupant protection laws and cracking down on dangerous driving habits,” Vallow said. “Our aim is to make the roadways safer in Park Forest.”

Illinois law prohibits passing a stopped school bus with its stop-arm extended and red lights flashing, regardless of whether it is on a street, parking lot, or school property. Vallow emphasized that drivers should stop at least 20 feet from a stopped bus on two-lane roads. On four-lane roads such as Western Avenue and Sauk Trail, only vehicles traveling in the same direction as the bus are required to stop.

Vallow also noted that following these rules not only helps drivers avoid fines but also protects children: “Understanding and obeying the law—especially stopping for school buses with flashing red lights and extended stop-arms—can help drivers avoid tickets and, more importantly, protect children.”

Recent national data shows an increase in fatalities related to school bus crashes. In 2023, there were 128 deaths across the United States linked to these incidents—a rise from 104 deaths in 2022. Most victims were occupants of other vehicles rather than passengers or pedestrians.
