Terry D'Arcy Mayor | City of Joliet
The City of Joliet, in collaboration with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), has announced a community meeting and planning study for the I-80 Des Plaines River Bridge area. This initiative will explore how $3.5 million in state funding can be utilized for community improvements in neighborhoods affected by the bridge replacement project.
IDOT has allocated these funds as part of its commitment during the environmental review process for the I-80 reconstruction. The designated area for improvements is bounded by S. Chicago Street/IL 53 to the east, S. Center Street to the west, McDonough Street to the north, and Edwards Street to the south.
Jayne Bernhard, Planning Director for Joliet, emphasized that "this planning process represents a significant opportunity for residents to shape the future of their neighborhood." Mayor Terry D'Arcy also highlighted that "this is about more than infrastructure — it's about people."
The planning study will consider various potential improvements such as a multi-use trail along the Des Plaines River and traffic calming measures on Water Street. An honorary plaque for Reverend Varnado and other projects aimed at strengthening neighborhood identity are also under consideration.
A community meeting is scheduled for July 22, 2025, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at All Nations Church of God in Joliet. The event will be conducted in a drop-in format with food provided and Spanish interpretation available.
Completion of the Community Plan is expected in 2026, followed by implementation of recommended improvements. The process includes multiple opportunities for public input through additional meetings and one-on-one engagements.
