As the Fourth of July approaches, Park Forest officials are cautioning residents against the illegal use of fireworks due to safety and community concerns. Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano emphasized the dangers associated with fireworks, noting their potential to cause injuries and fatalities.

"Fireworks are not just a legal issue; they are a serious safety hazard," Cotrano stated. He highlighted that even sparklers can reach temperatures between 1,200 to 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit, posing risks such as severe burns.

In Illinois, state law prohibits the use, possession, or sale of consumer fireworks like firecrackers and bottle rockets. Violators may face up to one year in prison and fines as high as $2,500. Locally in Park Forest, ordinances impose fines up to $750 for similar violations.

"The primary goal of enforcing these laws isn't to generate revenue—it's to deter individuals from lighting fireworks in the Village," Cotrano explained. He mentioned that dry conditions could increase wildfire risks and property damage.

Illegal fireworks also pose threats beyond personal injury. They can cause significant property damage and distress neighbors, pets, and individuals with PTSD due to their loud noise and unpredictability.

Cotrano encourages residents to consider alternative ways to celebrate that do not involve fireworks.
