Terry D'Arcy Mayor | City of Joliet
The City of Joliet, in collaboration with the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), is nearing completion of a conceptual development plan for downtown Joliet and the areas surrounding the Joliet Gateway Transportation Center. This initiative, known as the Downtown Joliet Equitable Transit Oriented Development (ETOD) Plan, aims to enhance development opportunities and improve mobility.
Mayor Terry D’Arcy highlighted that the draft plan emphasizes the need for diverse housing options to attract more residents to the downtown area. “More people in the downtown and surrounding neighborhoods is what will add further vitality," he stated. The planning project has been underway for over a year with contributions from city staff, consultants, and community partners.
An open house event will be held for residents and community stakeholders to review and discuss the draft plan. This event is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Gateway Transportation Center Train Station on East Jefferson Street. Free parking will be available in nearby lots, along with complimentary tacos and gift card raffles. Additionally, attendees can tour the Joliet Railroad Museum during this time.
City Planner Jayne Bernhard emphasized public input's importance in crafting a realistic plan. “We hope people will pop in and comment on the plan,” she said. Feedback collected at the open house will inform revisions by a consultant firm before being reviewed by various committees and eventually adopted by the City Council in July 2025.
