As more drivers hit the road with the arrival of warmer months, the Park Forest Police Department is urging motorists to stay alert and concentrate on driving. April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a period that highlights the significant number of fatalities resulting from distracted driving. Data from the Illinois State Police indicates 82 individuals lost their lives in distraction-related incidents statewide in 2024, making up about 6.63% of all fatal accidents in Illinois.
Deputy Chief Kristopher Vallow of Park Forest noted the department's focus on reducing distracted driving incidents. He highlighted the illegality of holding a cell phone while driving in Park Forest, with such violations classified as moving violations, leading to potential fines.
"Simply put, keep your eyes on the road and drive," Vallow stated. He emphasized the serious risks posed by using a cell phone while driving, which can lead to fatal accidents and severe injuries. "We are intensifying our enforcement efforts to ensure the safety of everyone in the Village."
Vallow also discussed the additional dangers associated with distracted driving, noting it severely affects a driver's ability to focus and respond to traffic changes. Distractions are not limited to phone use but include activities like eating, adjusting the radio, or conversing with passengers, all of which can significantly increase crash risks.
The department urges drivers to adopt safe driving practices and remain aware of their surroundings to protect themselves and other road users.
