A new initiative in Crete aims to honor community residents with honorary street names. The idea, introduced by Village Board member John Phelan, intends to recognize individuals who have contributed historically or culturally to the community or have made Crete a better place. Phelan cited examples from other areas, such as Chicago's Bridgeport neighborhood, where "Mike the Hot Dog Man" was honored for his long-standing community service.
Phelan noted, “In Chicago, they decided to have the street named after him, and allow them to have the honor of their name on a street, and I think that’s a great idea.”
The Crete Village Board has approved the program, which will commence on April 15. Residents can nominate individuals for honorary street signs by submitting an online application and paying a fee to cover the sign's cost. The Village Board will give final approval. Each honorary sign will be displayed for 12 months before being presented to the honoree or their family.
“It’s nice for the community. It’s a great way to bring people together. There are many people worthy of this honor in Crete. Let’s use our imagination and create some good suggestions,” Phelan said.
For nomination applications, residents can visit the Village of Crete's website.
