FOIA Request Sent to Channahon School District 17 Regarding Emails and Memos on January 28, 2025

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Channahon School District 17 on January 28, 2025. The request, issued by us at the Will County Gazette, seeks copies of all emails and memos from the past year that contain the keywords "Lucy Calkins" and "Units of Study."

As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we believe access to public records is essential for fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public.

The Illinois Freedom of Information Act, under which this request was made, provides a legal mechanism for citizens and organizations to access public records. We requested these documents in electronic format and also asked for a fee waiver given our role as a media organization disseminating information to the public.

In related news, according to the Illinois Report Card, the average state teacher salary in 2023 was $73,916, while the state average administrative salary stood at $116,908. The average student-to-administrative ratio is 141:1, indicating that there is one administrator for every 141 students. Meanwhile, the average student-to-teacher ratio is much lower at 17:1. It's also worth noting that over half (58%) of teachers in Illinois have achieved a master's degree or higher level of education.

We will continue our efforts to ensure transparency within our local government institutions and keep you updated on developments regarding this FOIA request.
