Helen Gonzalez, 86, Remembered for Love of Sports and Generosity, Passes Away Surrounded by Family

Plainfield - Helen Gonzalez, 86, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Remembered for her passion for sports, Helen excelled in bowling and volleyball, defeating the bowling champion in one of her competitions. An avid Cubs fan, Helen also enjoyed playing poker with family and friends, organizing family gatherings, and showcasing her generous spirit.

Helen was a longtime member of the Mary McDowell Settlement Alumni Association and cherished her visits to Don Rafa’s for carnitas. She is survived by her life partner of over 52 years, Patricia Holmsten, and her nephew Julian Gonzalez, whom they regarded as a son. Helen is also survived by her sisters and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

Preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Lupe Gonzalez, sister Andrea Aguina, and Aunts and Uncles, Helen's memory will be cherished by all who knew her.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, from 3-8 pm at Anderson Memorial Home in Plainfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday, October 24, 2024, at St. Andrew the Apostle in Romeoville, followed by interment at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lightways Hospice in Helen's name.

Helen Gonzalez will be fondly remembered for her love of sports, joyful spirit, and acts of kindness that left a lasting impact on those around her.
