City of Joliet Committee on Citizens with Disabilities met July 18.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

ROLL CALL

Ms. Kindall Carmouche, Disability Resource Center, filled in for Kevin Huckfeldt.

Present: Gary Jones, Kim Hudgens, Chairperson Pam Heavens, Sherry Voight, Billie Jo Adams, Steven Voight, Chairperson Tony Arellano and Veronica Pollard

Absent: Kevin Huckfeldt

APPROVAL OF MINUTES

A motion was made by Steven Voight, seconded by Kim Hudgens, to approve the Committee on Citizens with Disabilities Minutes from 6/20/23. The motion carried by the following vote:

Aye: Jones, Hudgens, Chairperson Heavens, Voight, Adams, Voight, Chairperson Arellano and Pollard

Absent: Huckfeldt

CITIZENS TO BE HEARD ON AGENDA ITEMS

This section is for anyone wanting to speak regarding agenda items and are allowed a maximum of 4 minutes. It is not a question and answer period and staff, and the Committee members do not generally respond to public comments. The City Clerk has a copy of the public speaking procedures; please note, speakers who engage in conduct injurious to the harmony of the meeting shall be called to order by the Presiding Officer and may forfeit the opportunity to speak.

None.

PRESENTATION: SEAN MIKOS, ADA COORDINATOR

Mr. Sean Mikos, Deputy Director of Public Works and ADA Coordinator, gave the Committee a presentation on the ADA transition plan for the right-of-way.

Mr. Mikos answered the Committee members questions. Mr. Mikos will return next month after the Committee has had a chance to look over the plan.

NEW OR OLD BUSINESS, NOT FOR FINAL ACTION OR RECOMMENDATION

Chairman Arellano requested one or two new members to the Committee. Ms. McNichol said she will inquire with the Mayor's office.

Chairman Arellano spoke about recreation facilities for people with disabilities. Ms. McNichol will contact someone at the park district.

Chairman Arellano spoke about the various titles of the American with Disabilities Act.

Ms. Pollard said it is very important to be aware of everyone's limitations.

Ms. Heavens reminded everyone that July 26 is the 33rd anniversary of ADA. Mr. Jones said there will be a disabilities pride parade as well.

Mrs. Voight spoke about her daughter Billy Jo and her experiences in school etc. Chairman Arellano spoke about the upcoming meeting on July 31st with Joliet Junior College.

PUBLIC COMMENT

Mr. Jones would like to see more bus shelters.

Chairman Arellano inquired about the snow program. Ms. McNichol responded.
