After hearing from EMA Director Bob Heim at its Nov. 14 meeting, The Beecher Village Board of Trustees agreed to purchase used radios from DuPage County rather than using radios on loan from Will County.
“We've been using borrowed radios from Will County, which is the same as the police,” Heim told the trustees. “We’ll be out there at 2 or 3 in the morning with no communication. And if something had to happen, we really need to be in contact with the police.”
The cost would be $3,000 for six portable radios, $2,000 for four mobile radios and $2,160 a year for 10 subscriptions to the network, giving the EMA communication capabilities with area police and fire agencies, which are transferring to the same network.
Trustees also learned that the subscription fees for the police radios are more expensive due to increased requirements.
It also was noted that while the radios are previously used, the radios the department currently is using were also previously used.
The trustees were told the radios will enhance safety during overnight shifts to ensure immediate contact with police. They also could be a secondary communication option for police if necessary.
