Rep. Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) is sponsoring legislation that would cap the state's motor fuel tax at 18 cents per gallon.
"Rising fuel prices are having a major impact on family budgets across Illinois. We can give our citizens a break by passing tax relief measures today, including my legislation to cap the gas sales tax at 18 cents per gallon," said Batinick.
Batinick introduced HB5723 earlier this month and it was recently referred to the House Rules Committee.
Illinoisans pay the second-highest gas tax in the country, according to Illinois Policy. In 2019, Gov. Pritzker doubled the state gas tax from 19 cents to 38 cents as part of the $45 billion infrastructure plan.
"We really don't think that there's a huge need in the state of Illinois to be sending more money to local government or allowing local government to tax more than they already are because they're already getting a huge cut of the revenue that's already out there," said Josh Sharp, president and CEO of the Illinois Fuel and Retail Association.
The average price of a regular gallon of gasoline in Illinois is $4.488 as of March 29, according to AAA, up from $3.686 one month ago and $3.063 one year ago.
