Dear editor:
Democrats in Springfield rammed a politically charged redistricting proposal through the state legislature last month. This was mostly fueled by the unexpected loss of one of their candidates, left-leaning Supreme Court Justice Thomas Kilbride, in last year’s retention election. The redistricting change marks the first time in over fifty years that the state’s appellate court boundaries have been redrawn.
It is no coincidence that the moment the Democrats began to fear they might lose their control of the state’s supreme court, which they currently control 5-4, they rushed to change the rules. Fortunately, the maps they created were so poorly conceived that the current Illinois Supreme Court, whose members stand to gain from the alteration, was forced to delay the implementation of the new plans to the appellate districts until further notice due to a myriad of administrative issues. Talk about a faulty rush job.
While I agree with the court’s delay, this situation never should have happened in the first place. The people of Illinois cannot allow this brand of shady politics to go on in our state.
