Michelle Lee hasn’t formally announced her run for the state senate, but readily admits she is already preparing for it.
“I am currently preparing to run for the state senate in District 43,” Lee said in a post to Facebook. “Quoting a friend until I have permission to tag her. 'Please do not take my passion for poison.'”
Mounting a campaign comes as nothing new for Lee, who previously won a spot as a Joliet Junior College Trustee with nearly 23,000 votes without accepting any campaign donations.
Recently, Lee has been a vocal part of the movement to prevent Critical Race Theory from being taught in Illinois schools.
Vowing to do all she can to prevent it from becoming a part of the Homer Glen 33C school district curriculum, Lee has blasted the teachings “as damaging to our kids,” according to the Will County Gazette.
In a video posted last month to YouTube, she added. “I am a concerned parent and I will continue to drive 30 minutes to an hour away to every single board meeting that I see to empower you as board members to do the right thing. ... My daughter is mixed. You know what she said to me? 'Mommy ... am I oppressing black people because I'm half white or am I being oppressed because I'm half black?' This is completely unacceptable.”
As the CRT debate has continue to rage, The Liberty Justice Center, a nonprofit, public-interest law firm, is now offering legal expertise and services to Hinsdale District 86 students and parents who feel their rights are being violated.
Lee said she too feels an obligation to fight, as well as make as many other parents aware of what’s happening a she can.
“I want to say this about CRT, it is damaging to our kids on every single level,” she told the board. “I'm going to guarantee you [that] you're going to get some parents that are going to run for office and that are going to change things. We do not want communism in America.”
