A Plainfield Township supervisor is facing a lot of heat for continuing to run in the April 6 consolidated election despite being charged with embezzlement.
In January, Anthony ‘Tony’ Fremarek was charged with embezzling almost $1.4 million from the firm he worked at. Prosecutors say he embezzled funds to pay for his credit card charges.
Prosecutors say Fremarek tried to hide his illegal activities by manipulating entries in the firm’s accounting system over six years. Prosecutors say he made it look like his payments were legitimate business expenses.
Fremarek is running again unopposed. Residents and candidates are calling for him to resign his position and desist from running for office ever again.
In an interview with Patch, John F. Argoudelis, a Plainfield mayoral candidate and former township supervisor, said he is calling on his fellow Republicans to demand that Fremarek withdraw his name from the ballot and resign from his position immediately.
Argoudelis said, “Illinois government is plagued with corruption from top to bottom, but I would hope in our local government we would not tolerate it,"
He continued. "The right thing would be for all local Republicans to call on him to resign as township supervisor so that our community can move forward while he settles his personal problems.”
