IV. OLD BUSINESS

1. Update on the 2020 Census  (Information)

Ms. Mueller stated some of you are probably aware that we are in the final stretch of the 2020 Census. We have received an update from Mr. Johnson. Will County is doing slightly better than we were in 2010.

Mr. Palmer stated we try to be active at the Federal level; that is the reason we  have a Federal Lobbyist. We are also very active in NACo; the LUCC (Large Urban  County Caucus) Committee sent out a draft letter that they asked members to  submit to their delegation. As we all know the point of the census is to count the  population which drives funding levels. A big county like Will County that is growing; it is very critical. Since we are active on funding and bringing dollars back  to our local communities; we thought it was a good letter to sign on to. The gist of  the letter was that there was a change from the October 31st deadline; moving the  response to Sept 30th which is fast approaching. The letter was calling to stick with  the original date; because it is critical that we get an accurate count. Since we  have an Ad-Hoc Complete Count Census committee and a Legislative & Policy  committee we have added the Chairs of those meetings to the letter to send to  our delegation. It reiterates all of the points of why the census is important; it also  highlights Will County’s success of already getting to our 2010 numbers. We are  pushing hard to go beyond that and get even better numbers. I also know of some  of the other Senators are sending letters with the same message.

Ms. Mueller stated we are losing about 30 days on the census. I have been in  contact with folks working out in the field counting group quarters; places where  folks live in hotels and places like that. There is rush to get that done; please  support those folks in your community.

Ms. Brass asked why the original deadline was changed.

Mr. Palmer stated I don’t know the exact motivation but it was the Administration  that changed that; under the Executive Branch. Beyond the funding it is also going  to drive our remap and the congressional remaps. There is a timeliness of that; in  the past it had always been the end of October. They do their work quickly  through the end of the year. Then early next year we will have that data for our  own remap in our county and the congressional remap. All of that happens in  2021.

Ms. Brass stated Mr. Brooks and I have a strategy here in District #8. We started out with 110 census signs and are now down to 27 signs. I am also a part of Delta  Sigma Theta Sorority incorporated with five programmatic thrusts. On my  Facebook page I have a frame “I Count 2020.” I use that frame to put out a  message to put out a plea for the undercounted to complete the census. That is  what we are doing in District #8. Thank you Mr. Johnson for all of that  information.

Ms. Traynere stated the Census Caravan is being put on by the Census  Department it will be Friday between 10:00 am and 11:30 am starting at the  Spanish Community Center; it is going to be Joliet based.

Ms. Mueller stated so anyone who is available Friday morning lets meet at the Spanish Community Center. I will get you more information on that. That is the update for now; if anyone has any questions let us know. I will do my best to get  you answers.
