Illinois State House District 37 issued the following announcement on April 23.
State Representative Margo McDermed (R-Mokena) issued the following statement in response to Governor Pritzker’s announcement of the extended Stay at Home Order and its modifications:
“I appreciate that the Governor acknowledged the economic difficulties facing many residents in our state and has modified his stay at home order so that struggling hospitals and small businesses can stay afloat during this pandemic. These modifications, some of the many suggestions brought forth by the House Republican Caucus, reflect the reality of where and how the virus spreads, and the need for many to put food on the table.
Unfortunately, for many these new modifications will be too little too late. The inability of IDES to successfully link the many recently unemployed with their benefits and the approaching end of the month has put many families on the brink of disaster as bills come due. If we are to ask Illinoisans to continue to struggle under this order, he must work to fix the departments in his administration that are failing to meet their duties and consult with the legislature, and outside help, wherever applicable, to ensure that we have secured the safety nets people rely upon in times of crisis such as these.
We have given Governor Pritzker tremendous leeway in his decision-making over the past month and a half, but he must do more moving forward to include the legislative branch in his decision-making. He cannot continue to rebuff the input of legislators, especially those outside of Chicago. Illinoisans will not long tolerate the struggles being thrust upon them without more of a voice.”
