CHANNAHON AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Be Counted in the 2020 Census

Censusman

Channahon Area Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on Feb. 24.

What is the 2020 Census and why is it important?

The census (actual enumeration) is required by the Constitution and has been conducted once a decade since 1790. The census ensures that each community gets the right number of representatives in government and its fair share of federal tax dollars over the next 10 years.

Why is Census 2020 important to Channahon?

Because representation is based on population, an up-to-date tally is essential. More than 300 new homes have been built in Channahon in the past three years, and our population has increased significantly.

Federal tax dollars, and many grant opportunities, use population as a basis for distribution of dollars. Local governments use census data to apply for various grants and other potential funding sources. Businesses can use census data to decide where to build offices, stores, factories and create jobs. Our participation in Census 2020 will ensure that our residents are adequately represented, federal funding is fairly distributed and Channahon remains competitive in the business market.

How can you participate in Census 2020?

Census 2020 will be the first census to allow all U.S. households to respond online. Paper forms will still be available. Some households will receive a printed questionnaire which they can mail, postage-free, back to the Census Bureau. Also, for the first time, residents may call 1-800 numbers to give responses over the phone. Households that do not respond themselves by early April may start receiving visits from door knockers.

The Census Bureau includes every living person in the U.S. - regardless of citizenship or immigration status. The Census Bureau also has detailed plans to count deployed troops, college students and other groups in unique living situations. The new population counts will be announced by Dec. 31, 2020. Census data for state and local redistricting is set to be released by May 31, 2021, and federal reapportionment of congressional seats will go into effect with the 2022 elections.
