Illinois State House District 37 issued the following announcement on Sept. 5.
State Representative Margo McDermed (R-Mokena) invites residents to take advantage of a free document shredding event and to give back to the community on Saturday, September 21st.
“My annual shred events are always a huge hit because it’s an incredibly easy and quick process to help prevent identity theft that brings peace of mind to those who have documents they just don’t feel comfortable throwing away,” said Rep. McDermed. “I wanted to capitalize on the great turnout we get every year by turning this into a food drive as well. While it’s not necessary to bring anything to utilize the free shredding services, I hope we can turn this event into a great benefit for those in need.”
As with past shred events, it will take place in the parking lot of Rep. McDermed’s office at 11032 W Lincoln Highway. The office is located next to the Frankfort food pantry which will be the main beneficiary of the drive. The pantry accepts standard foods like non-perishables, canned pasta, canned fruit, granola bars, soups, peanut butter, jelly, and condiments. Less well known is that they also collect other foods like feminine hygiene products, lotions, toilet paper, and shampoo and conditioner. The event will run from 10-11:00am. Drivers will bring their vehicles up to the truck where volunteers will be available to unload documents and items to be donated. Drivers are asked not to exit their vehicles. If a driver wishes to watch their documents go through the shredding process, park and watch spots will be available. Due to expected volume, only two boxes of shreddable documents will be accepted from each vehicle. No electronics will be accepted for recycling or disposal.
