The price of local government in 2017: City of Wilmington

The City of Wilmington budget was $19 million for its 2017 fiscal year, or $9,357 per household.

That's an increase of 4.9 percent from 2016, when the city spent $18.11 million, or $8,918 per household.

Wilmington has 2,031 households and a population of 5,724.

Since 2001, the City of Wilmington budget has grown by 168.6 percent, from $7.07 million. The city population has grown 11.5 percent over the same period, from 5,134.

Salaries accounted for 14.6 percent of city spending in 2017. Wilmington property taxpayers paid $2.77 million for 41 full-time employees and 23 part-time employees.

In 2001, the city had 34 full-time employees and 48 part-time employees, and spent $2.09 million.
