The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is imposing vehicle weight restrictions on the Briggs Street bridge over Interstate 80 in Joliet to reduce stress on the structure, a posting on the city's website said.
The posting said a recent IDOT inspection found structural issues with the bridge and the agency is imposing a weight restriction of 12 tons per axle/41 tons gross weight for vehicles using the bridge.
Signs indicating the weight restrictions are being posted at the bridge and nearby intersections. No postings for a truck detour are being posted because the bridge is not a designated route for trucks, the posting said.
The posting said the weight restrictions do not mean the bridge is hazardous or that drivers using the bridge are in danger. The restrictions are intended to reduce wear and tear on beam ends ahead of repairs and maintenance. Structure replacement is scheduled under IDOT's proposed Highway Improvement Program for 2018-23.
