Vietnam veteran John "Jack" Picciolo recently received the Illinois Veterans’ Patriotic Volunteer and Appreciation Award from the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs (IDVA) for his contributions to his community and the veteran community at large, according to a release from the department.
Picciolo received the award for the first quarter of the 2018 fiscal year in recognition of his unflagging efforts to fight veteran homelessness. Picciolo has moved veterans out of cars and into safe shelters and out of shelters and into permanent housing, according to the release.
“Mr. Picciolo has gone above and beyond for our Illinois Veterans,” IDVA Director Erica Jeffries said in the release. “His care and concern for our Illinois Heroes is amazing. He not only assists with housing, but follows up with each one to encourage self-sufficiently.”

Picciolo is an Army veteran, serving from April 1964 to April 1965. He has worked to assist Vietnam veterans, taking steps to improve their quality of life, the release said.
The Illinois Veterans’ Patriotic Volunteer and Appreciation Award is issued quarterly to those who exemplify leadership, dedication, innovation and impact while serving their local area and the veteran community, according to the release.
