Joliet did its part to help launch the start of a yearlong celebration of Illinois' 200th birthday by participating in the statewide Illinois Bicentennial Flag Raising Ceremony on Dec. 4 at the Joliet Veterans Memorial building at 201 West Jefferson at Bluff Street.
Members of Joliet’s Police Honor Guard presented the colors for the flag raising followed by Mayor Bob O’Dekirk reading a proclamation to begin the bicentennial celebrations, a city news release said.
The theme of the yearlong celebration is “Born, Built & Grown” to celebrate the everyday people, places and things that make Illinois the state it is, the release said.
Events and activities continuing through Dec. 4, 2018, will explore and celebrate Illinois’ special contributions to American history, achievement, culture and innovation since becoming a state on Dec. 3, 1818.
