Mokena FPD responds to 70 fires in 2016

Mokena Fire Protection District responded to 588 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the Will County Gazette.

The calls in Mokena included 70 fires - 37 structure fires, 11 vehicle fires and 19 other fires. The fire department also responded to three calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $167,250 in fire loss - or about $2,389 per fire.

The department also received 518 false calls, including 198 malicious calls and 320 other false calls.

The Mokena FPD Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 33 active employees and four retired or inactive employees, was $166,831 positive as of May 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $2,383 for every fire in 2016.
