Rep. Mark Batinick (R-Plainfield) and Troy Township are inviting Shorewood-area women to learn to take self-defense into their own hands on Aug. 17 at the Troy Township Community Center, according to a press release.
The three-hour class is free, but donations are encouraged, as any money collected will go to Women at Risk International and its efforts to prevent human trafficking and aid trafficking victims.
The class will begin at 6 p.m. and cover self-defense, distraction and awareness.

“I hosted a series of women’s self-defense classes throughout our district last year, at which hundreds of local women and girls successfully participated,” Batinick said in the release. “This class is a valuable resource for our wives, mothers, sisters, daughters and friends to learn how to keep themselves safe should their safety be threatened. We are excited to partner with Troy Township to offer this class to women in Shorewood.”
The Troy Township Community Center is located at 24448 Seil Road in Shorewood. RSVPs can be made by emailing debk.repbatinick@gmail.com or calling 815-254-0000.
