John Fenili, Revered Educator and Family Man, Remembered with Love

John Fenili EdD | Vandenberg Funeral Home - Mokena

John P. "Jack" Fenili, EdD, age 84, of Mokena, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, after a prolonged illness. He was born on June 29, 1941, in Joliet, and was the son of Clarice and Joseph Fenili.

A passionate advocate for education, John dedicated his life to teaching and mentoring others. He was proud of his educational achievements, attaining degrees from institutions such as Joliet Junior College, Lewis University, Indiana University Terre Haute, and Northern Illinois University. His career in education began at Joliet Township High School District and continued as an Associate Professor at Lewis University, where he guided and inspired many students.

Aside from his professional career, John was a devoted husband to Barbara, and together they shared 60 years of marriage filled with love, adventure, and cherished memories. They were blessed with two children, Joe and Kim, as well as four grandchildren whom John adored.

John will be deeply missed by his family, which includes his siblings, Jeanne Garlitz and Lori Schroeder, along with his nieces, great-nephew, and many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws.

Visitation for John Fenili will take place on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, from 2 to 7 pm at Vandenberg Funeral Home. The celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mokena, IL, following a funeral service at Vandenberg Funeral Home. Interment will follow at St. Mary Nativity Cemetery in Joliet, IL.

In honoring John's life, consider watching the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" or dancing to "Moon River," the film's Oscar-winning song, which held sentimental meaning for John and Barbara.
