The Village of Peotone is set to vote on ending its vehicle sticker program at the board meeting scheduled for January 27, 2025. The decision follows a review of the program’s financial impact and years of discussion among village officials.

At the December 16 board meeting, Village Administrator Nick Palmer presented historical data about the program to Mayor Peter March and the Trustees. The board discussed concerns about potential revenue loss if the program were discontinued. After reviewing current financial trends, officials agreed that ending the program would not negatively affect the village budget.

"There were some concerns about how ending the program would affect our revenue streams and budget, but with the steady increase in revenues from new and existing businesses, we are confident we can make this change without negative consequences," said Mayor Peter March.

The vehicle sticker requirement has been in place for many years, obligating residents to purchase stickers for each vehicle regularly parked or housed in Peotone. Renewal forms were typically mailed out each December, with purchases required by mid-February. The process was manual and required significant staff time as well as trips by residents to Village Hall.

Village Administrator Nick Palmer stated that discontinuing the program would benefit residents by removing an annual task. "This is a way to give some dollars back to our residents while eliminating a process that was costly and time-consuming for the Village," Palmer said. He noted that although about $70,000 was collected annually through stickers, staff believe these funds can be replaced through other revenue sources and operational efficiencies.

Mayor March highlighted ongoing efforts to improve services and reduce costs. "The Trustees and I have continually asked our staff to find ways to streamline services and better serve residents. Ending the vehicle sticker program is a practical step in that direction," he said.

A draft ordinance will be reviewed by the Village Board in January 2025 to formally end the program. Once approved, no renewal letters will be sent out at year-end, concluding a long-standing annual procedure for Peotone residents.

This action aims to simplify operations within the village government and lessen administrative burdens on both staff and community members.
