The Village of Mokena has announced that fishing will now be allowed in certain village-owned ponds following the approval of a new ordinance by the Village Board. The decision is aimed at providing residents with an additional recreational activity while maintaining environmental oversight.
According to the guidelines, fishing is permitted only at ponds with marked public access points. Signs will indicate which areas are open to the public. Ponds without such access remain off-limits except for residents living nearby or those who have received permission from homeowners or associations. The ordinance stresses that trespassing on private property is not allowed.
A valid State of Illinois fishing license is required for anyone fishing in these designated ponds. Children under 16 may fish if accompanied by a parent or guardian who holds a valid license.
The rules also include several conduct requirements: “Catch and Release: All fishing must follow a catch-and-release policy to help maintain fish populations.
• Daylight Hours Only: Fishing is allowed from sunrise to sunset to respect neighboring properties.
• Environmentally Safe Practices: Only environmentally safe bait and fishing methods are allowed.
• Safety First: Swimming, boating, and ice fishing are not permitted.
• No Alcohol: Alcohol consumption is prohibited on Village-owned or public property while fishing.”
The village will work with environmental agencies to monitor pond conditions and fish populations regularly. If any problems arise, corrective actions will be taken.
Violations of the ordinance could result in fines up to $750. The village encourages everyone to help keep the ponds clean, safe, and enjoyable for all.
“We’re excited to make this recreational activity available while preserving the peaceful beauty of our local ponds,” according to the statement from the Village of Mokena.
A map showing which ponds are available for fishing has been provided by the village.
