After more than 30 years of service, Park Forest Fire Department Shift Commander and Paramedic Patrick Hisel is retiring. Hisel will be taking on a new position as deputy chief at the Richton Park Fire Department.
Hisel started his career with the Park Forest Fire Department on May 8, 1991, joining the Paid on Call Division. He became a full-time firefighter on January 30, 1995. During his career, he received several certifications from the Illinois State Fire Marshal in areas such as Advanced Technician Firefighter, Fire Apparatus Engineer, Fire Officer II, Fire Investigator, Fire Inspector, and Vehicle/Machinery Operations. He also maintained licensure as an EMT-Paramedic.
In recognition of his work and dedication to both the department and local residents, Hisel was named Firefighter/Paramedic of the Year in 2015. Alongside his firefighting and paramedic duties, he served as emergency management coordinator for the Village and spent nearly three decades on the board of the Park Forest Firefighter’s Association—IAFF Local 1263.
A lifelong resident of Park Forest and graduate of Rich East High School in 1990, Hisel was known for his commitment to his community. The resolution honoring him noted that he "bleeds green and gold," referring to his school colors.
"Pat’s leadership, dedication, and mentorship have left a lasting mark on this department," said Deputy Fire Chief Mark Cotrano. "He’s been more than just a colleague—he’s a true friend to many of us."
The Village board and staff thanked Hisel for his service and wished him well in retirement.
Cotrano added that Hisel's departure closes an important chapter for the department but that his example will continue to guide future public safety professionals.
