Simon F. Handzik | O'Neil Funeral Home And Heritage Crematory - Lockport

Simon Handzik, aged 93, passed away at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox. Born on February 4, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois, to Anna and Joseph Handzik, Simon was a proud United States Army Veteran who served as a helicopter mechanic during the Korean War. He married Catherine (Nee Gabel) (Nabzdyk) Handzik on June 19, 1965, celebrating 60 years of marriage the day before his passing.

Simon's pride and joy were his 14 children, whom he cherished dearly along with his grandchildren. A Journeyman Pattern Maker, he had a long and dedicated career in the Chicagoland area. Simon enjoyed fixing things, woodworking, golfing, and traveling in his spare time, displaying a talent for repairing any broken item brought to him.

Preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Handzik, daughters Nancy Hilgenbrink and Madeline Nabzdyk, parents Joseph and Anna Handzik, and siblings George, Tom Handzik, and Catherine Hines, Simon is survived by his loving wife, Catherine, devoted children, son-in-law, sisters-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a large extended family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Marian Village, Franciscan Village, or Dementia Society of America in Simon's honor.

Visitation will be held at the O'Neil Funeral Home Chapel in Lockport on Sunday, June 29, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., with prayers on Monday, June 30, 2025, at 9:00 a.m., followed by Mass of Christian Burial at Marian Village in Homer Glen at 10:00 a.m. Cremation Rites will follow.
