Phillip Ray Sylvester | Baskerville Funeral Home - Wilmington

Phillip Ray Sylvester, aged 75 of Elwood, Illinois, passed away on April 30, 2025, at the Illinois Veteran's Home in Manteno. Born on August 2, 1949, in Arcola, Illinois, to Russell and Wilma Sylvester, Phillip embarked on a commendable journey that left a lasting impact on those who knew him.

Phillip proudly served in the United States Army, with a deployment to South Korea from 1971-1972 where he was part of the 6th Battalion, 44th Artillery Hawk Missile unit as a Tactical Control Assistant. Post-military service, he had a successful career, notably working for extensive periods with Westinghouse Electric Corporation and Unocal UNOVEN Citgo refinery. Philip's work ethic and dedication were admirable, earning him respect and accolades throughout his professional life.

A lifelong member of the Stone City VFW Post #2199, Phillip was also known as a staunch advocate for firearm owners' rights. He found solace in nature, engaging in activities like fishing, photography, and caring for houseplants. Among his cherished companions was his beloved feline friend, Sarah Sylvester.

Survived by his niece, Christine, and great-nephew, Justin, Phillip's memory will be cherished by his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Sharon, sister Brenda, and brother Jimmy.
