Traffic control changes imminent for downtown Chicago street streetscape project

As the Chicago Street Streetscape project enters its next phase, significant road closures and traffic changes will begin on Saturday, March 22, 2025. These adjustments are necessary for water main work on Chicago Street extending from Cass Street to Webster Street. During the daytime, Chicago Street will be completely closed to vehicular traffic within this section, though it will reopen each evening for about two weeks. As construction proceeds through the intersection, one lane on Cass Street will remain open but will shift accordingly.

The road work also affects parking availability. Daytime parking will be prohibited on Chicago Street between Cass Street and Webster Street from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to facilitate uninterrupted construction activities. Additionally, pre-existing closures will persist. Chicago Street will remain closed from Jefferson to Van Buren Street and from Clinton Street to Cass Street until ComEd finishes reconstructing vaults in these areas. Parking on these streets is not permitted, and the use of the City Center parking deck is advised.

To maintain pedestrian safety, demarcated routes will be established with safety fencing or construction barrels. Businesses along the affected streets will remain accessible to pedestrians despite the construction activities.

For those seeking more information, further updates will be provided as the project advances.

"One thru lane on Cass Street will remain open and shift as construction moves thru the intersection," stated the project update.

"There is no daytime parking on Chicago Street from Cass Street to Webster Street, from 7 am to 4 pm, to allow continued construction activities," the announcement detailed.

All efforts are being made to minimize disruption while maintaining access to local businesses. "Safety fencing or construction barrels define safe pedestrian routes throughout the construction zone, but all businesses are open and pedestrian access to all businesses will be maintained at all times," confirmed the statement.

Additional information will be shared as the construction work continues.
