He is survived by his wife, Cora Ruthann (Dexter) Sanders, whom he married on June 17, 1961, and their children, Larina Sanders of Crete, Illinois, and Lawrence Jr. (Sherry) Sanders of Cedar Lake, Indiana. He also leaves behind his grandchildren Daniel Sanders, Heather (Jacob) Reynolds, and Lawrence III (Lauren) of Cedar Lake, Indiana, and two great-granddaughters, Skylar Sanders of Cullom, Illinois, and Brookelynn Reynolds of Cedar Lake, Indiana. His surviving relatives include sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Lawrence, born on April 16, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois, was a dedicated professional who served for 40 years at Ameritech Phone Company (formerly Illinois Bell Telephone Co.). His career began as a Lineman and concluded as an Outside Plant Engineer. Additionally, he was a former Policeman for Beecher, Illinois, and a Real Estate agent at Premier Real Estate, Ltd., Beecher, Illinois.
A patriot and a man of service, Lawrence volunteered for the draft and served for two years in the US 5th Army, with extended service in Berlin, Germany. Following his military service, he spent 20 years in the Active Reserves, retiring as a Sergeant First Class (E7) in December 1980.
Lawrence was involved in numerous community organizations and activities, including his church, St. Luke United Church of Christ. He was a member of various groups such as AMVETS, Berlin United States Military Association, and Square Dance clubs. His passion for camping, square dancing, and engaging in community service activities shaped his lively personality and enduring legacy.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to AMVETS Post #67 Scholarship Fund or St. Luke Church.
