Illinois State House District 97 candidate Gabby Shanahan emphasized the need for "an honest and responsive government" after displaying her personal receipt from groceries and gas at Costco. She made this statement in a July 2 Facebook post.

"The cost of living is out of control and hurting Illinois families," said Shanahan, according to Facebook. "How do I know? This is my personal grocery bill and gas fill up today. We need an honest and responsive government that empowers families, holds the line on over-spending, and prioritizes people over special interests."

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the Consumer Price Index for all items less food and energy in the Midwest region was 2.7% higher in May 2024. While gas fuel prices dropped by 0.2 percent, food prices rose by 0.2 percent during the same period. The prices of cereals and bakery products increased by 0.6 percent over the month, with the overall food index up by 1.5%. The BLS separates food for consumption at home from foods meant to be eaten outside the home. Grocery store prices for food at home rose by 0.4 percent, followed by non-alcoholic beverages and beverage materials, which saw a rise of 3.9%. However, the price index for fruits and vegetables dropped by 2.2%.
