At the Feb. 21 meeting of the Village of Tinley Park board, the trustees passed a measure to eliminate the 1965 ordianance mandating vehicle stickers.
According to a press release, residents who would still like something to display on their vehicles can pick up a free sticker from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. starting Monday, April 3 at Tinley Park Village Hall, 16250 S. Oak Park Ave., or at the Tinley Park Police Department,7850 W. 183rd St. Residents are reminded to bring their vehicles registration.
Previously, all vehicles operated by residents on a public street or highway in the village were required to have a vehicle sticker displayed at all times, the village website said. Stickers also were required for vehicles stored in the village. Leased and company-owned vehicles required stickers, too.
Trustee Diane Galante opposed rescinding the vehicle sticker program because of concern about the loss in capital. Galante wanted to table the ordinance until alternatives could be investigated.
Mayor Michael Glotz told the board that the approximately $1 million in fees collected through the program can be recovered in other ways.
“At one point I had four vehicles in my driveway (and) I would pay for four of them,” Trustee Colleen Sullivan said. “There's elderly people, our seniors, that typically play by the rules. And they pay for their stickers. They could be on a fixed income. It's going to help them.”
