Illinois Senate Republican Leader John Curran (R-Downers Grove) has introduced a resolution aimed at rejecting any "progressive income tax measure" introduced in the 103rd General Assembly.
Curran talked about his stance against Sen. Robert Martwick's (D-Chicago) effort to change the state's income tax structure despite voters rejecting it.
"The people have spoken," Curran said in a Jan. 25 statement, quoted by the Will County Gazette. "They don't want to change our Constitution to a progressive income tax. The tax failed in the collar counties that I represent, and was crushed downstate where our caucus has the largest geographic representation. It is time to move in a new direction. We are standing behind the people of this state who resoundingly said no, and standing up for families who cannot afford to be overtaxed.”
Curran filed the resolution opposing Martwick's proposal on Jan. 25. Republican senators all signed on as co-sponsors.
The resolution stated that all GOP members of the Senate are staunchly opposed to "any constitutional amendment intended to change the flat-rate income tax language" in the state's Constitution.
Curran has served in the Illinois Senate since 2017, the General Assembly website said. His legislative experience includes serving on the Appropriations II and Assignments committees. He resides in Downers Grove.
