Multiple residents of Homer Glen came out to the June 8 Board meeting to express their support for appointing Jay Rhodey to the planning committee. Rhodey had put in his resume to volunteer as a board member several months ago. He has decades of experience in construction and zoning, and his supporters say he has a genuine interest and care for the community.
George Yukich, the mayor of Homer Glen, however, declined to open the motion to get board approval to appoint Rhodey.
"Jay, you up to talking tonight? Alright, we will talk after this meeting is over. I’m not putting a vote on it right now," Yukich said at the board meeting.
Many of the board members spoke against Yukich's refusal and spoke in favor of appointing Rhodey. One board member was in favor of the mayor’s decision to wait and speak with Rhodey before voting. Some members said the vacancy had existed for around a year and Rhodey’s application had been put in eight months ago.
After the discussion on Rhodey, the mayor attempted to get board approval for his appointment of Bryan Kozor as chairperson of the planning committee. His request was met with a motion but not a second, meaning his motion did not pass and Kozor was not appointed chairperson, similar to the motion that was not made for Rhodey.
