State Sen. Patrick Joyce (D-Park Forest) has advanced a measure to require renewable fuel sources for transportation by 2024.

The measure, known as Senate Bill 2394, was an initiative led by the Illinois Soybean Association. The legislation would require diesel within IL to incrementally increase the use of biodiesel fuel oil over a few years.

“[On April 15], I advanced a measure through the Senate Agriculture Committee that aims to create a statewide renewable fuel standard which would require biodiesel for transportation fuel beginning in 2024," Joyce said in a Facebook post.

If passed, diesel fuel for internal combustion engines would be required to contain at least 5% biodiesel fuel until July 24, 2024. After that date, the state would then require at least 20% biodiesel fuel in diesel from that point forward.

“Transitioning to biodiesel is not only better for the environment — it also puts money back into local farmers’ pockets," the Park Forest Democrat said in a statement. "As we invest in greener technologies, it’s important that we find ways to keep Illinois dollars in Illinois.”

Senate Bill 2394 was passed in the Senate Agriculture Committee and will be voted on later.
