Joliet Junior College’s nursing students passed their licensure exams with flying colors, scoring much higher than many more well-known schools.

Those results gained them praise from local government officials.

Students from the college’s nursing program have earned 96% first-time pass rates for their 2020 National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), which is well above the national average of 87%.

“I’m so proud of our graduates who persevered despite the pandemic,” Mary Beth Luna, chair of the JJC nursing department, said, Shaw Local News reported. “And I’m very proud and humbled to work with such exceptional and dedicated faculty and staff who worked tirelessly to maintain our high educational standards, even while putting the program online in a short period of time.”

The path to the NCLEX examination, which is required to become a licensed nurse, is challenging, as candidates must apply for licensure to the Nursing Regulatory Body and pay for the exam before they are even eligible for the test.

“Joliet Junior College continues to impress!” Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) wrote on a Facebook post. “Just another asset in our backyard. Keep up the amazing work!”

In addition to the 97% pass rate, students in the practical nursing program who took the corresponding (NCLEX-PN) exam have earned a 100% pass rate.

“I know that NCLEX-RN pass rates among many nursing schools in the state have suffered in 2020,” Luna said. “I am thrilled that ours have held steady.”

The JJC nursing program is a fully accredited program by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc.

The national average for the NCLEX-PN is 83%, making JJC’s score 17% higher than the national average.

Since the year 1994, over 6 million candidates have taken the NCLEX, according to NCSBN.org.
