As has been done in the last two sessions of the Illinois General Assembly, a bill has been introduced to revoke authority for units of local government to issue oversize/overweight truck permits on their local roads. HB0397 is up in the House Transportation: Vehicles and Safety Committee for a hearing on Wednesday, March 10th, 2021 @ 9:00am and you can file a witness slip in opposition to it today!
Much like the bills which proceeded this one, IDOT (who did not sponsor this legislation) would be given authority to route the biggest and heaviest trucks on your local roads. This would be done with no input from local authorities, no revenue sharing and no local oversight. In essence, the State of Illinois could choose to route these vehicles off their failing infrastructure and onto your local roads at their discretion.
Join the Illinois Municipal League in opposing this bill, and contact the associations who advocate for your local community by encouraging them to oppose as well.
