Illinois State House District 98 issued the following announcement on May 6.
To help ensure students have access to internet as Illinois schools have transitioned to e-learning for the remainder of the school year, state Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, is highlighting the new Wi-Fi hotspot map available to families throughout the state.
“I commend the educators across the state that adapted their curriculum at a moment’s notice to give students the ability to continue their school work through remote learning during this health emergency,” said Manley. “Unfortunately, not every student has access to the internet, which has made the move to online learning difficult. Thankfully, many schools, libraries and other organizations across the state are offering free Wi-Fi drive-up hotspots to help students stay on track.”
Manley is highlighting Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s new Wi-Fi hotspot map to help support Illinois students while they continue e-learning. The resource map was spearheaded by several state agencies including the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE), the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE), the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) and the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB). As schools have been closed for the remainder of the school year, the map was created to help ensure students can complete online coursework, which can include video conferencing, online testing, research and assignments. Parents and guardians can drive their children to the Wi-Fi hotspots where they may use them for their schoolwork and other needs. “The COVID-19 crisis has caused the daily lives of many Illinoisans to change drastically, but the Wi-Fi hotspot map is a smart solution to address real issues facing many students across the state,” continued Manley. “Providing free access to wireless internet through drive-up hotspots will help students complete their school year strong while ensuring they stay safe and follow social distancing recommendations.”
