Joliet City Council met Jan. 14.

Here is the minutes provided by the council:

I. ROLL CALL:

PRESENT: Mayor Robert O'Dekirk, Councilman Don "Duck" Dickinson, Councilwoman Bettye Gavin, Councilman John E. Gerl, Councilman Larry E. Hug, Councilman Pat Mudron, Councilwoman Jan Hallums Quillman, Councilman Michael F. Turk.

ABSENT: Councilman Terry Morris.

ALSO PRESENT: Interim City Manager Martin J. Shanahan, Jr., Interim 

Corporation Counsel Chris Regis.

II. PRESENTATION:

A. Alternative Water Source Study: Phase I Summary – Allison Swisher, Director of Public Utilities

Councilman Morris arrived at the meeting at 5:34 p.m.

Director of Public Works Allison Swisher gave a brief overview of the Alternative Water Source Study - Phase I. The study reviewed rivers, ground water, and Lake Michigan as water source alternatives. Water quality and quantity will need to be examined further to determine viable options. In addition, Ms. Swisher briefly discussed Phase II goals, tasks, additional components, and next steps.

In response to Councilman Hug's question, Jeff Freeman with Engineering Enterprises, Inc. (EEI) discussed the current aquifer as a backup water supply and its recovery period.

Councilwoman Quillman suggested the Environmental Commission and Ms. Swisher take steps to encourage water conservation.

Mayor O'Dekirk recommended the scheduling of a meeting with the City Council and the Environmental Commission to discuss priorities.

The Deputy Liquor Commissioner gave a brief update on this Council Memo.

A brief discussion was held regarding monies owed to the City.
