Jean Phelps has been selected as coach of the Providence Catholic High School girl’s volleyball team.
Phelps will inherit a team that boasts 11 seniors and 10 returning players from last season’s squad, which won a regional for the third straight season.
“This is a great opportunity,” Phelps told the Herald News. “I’m excited about being able to come back since my oldest child is going to be a freshman there.”
Phelps, a 1999 graduate of the school, played at Providence under coach Nan Airola. Her mother also played at the school, as did her brother, who also later became an assistant for the boy's program. She recently coached club volleyball in the area.
“As long as the girls are coached well and are willing to listen and to take risks, and they are, then they’ll be excited about doing something different and something new,” Phelps said. “It will definitely be great to wear the Celtics’ colors with pride again."
