Braidwood City Council met May 22.

Here is the minutes provided by the Council:

Call to Order:

Mayor Vehrs called the meeting to order at 7:00 pm.

Pledge of Allegiance:

Mayor Vehrs asked Sandy from BAHS to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Roll Call:

Elected Officials present: Commissioner Hibler, Commissioner Hutton, Commissioner Smith and Mayor Vehrs were present. Commissioner Tessler was absent.

Appointed officials present: City Attorney Kopman, City Clerk Sue Grygiel, City Administrator Don Labriola and Chief Nick Ficarello were present. City Engineer Todd Gereaux was absent.

Public Comment:

Opened at 7:01pm.

Scotty Allison, from the Braidwood American Legion. Scotty thanked the city, all the officials and the employees that helped them with a small problem they had with their flagpole across the street earlier this month. It was fixed in a timely manner and thank you. Scotty also advised everyone that their Annual Poppy Day was a great success.

RCHS Volleyball Parent. She said she was in contact with the office today, trying to get in a Tag Day for June 9th and wasn’t able to get on the Agenda in time. The Mayor asked what organization and she said Reed Custer Volleyball then he asked what streets. She replied the intersections at Routes 129 & 53. The Mayor said he will bring this up under New Business on the Agenda.

Approval of Minutes:

Comm. Hibler made a motion to approve the Regular Meeting Minutes of May 8, 2018 as written, seconded by Comm. Smith. Motion approved 4 ayes, 0 nays (Hibler, Smith, Hutton & Mayor Vehrs) 1 absent (Tessler).

Reports By City Officials:

Mayor-

The Mayor had one thing to report on, the Memorial Day Program. The Program will start at 9:00 across the street by the monument. This program is well attended each year, the Reed Custer Band does an excellent job along with the chorus. The Mayor invited everyone to please come and honor all our Veterans. The Mayor thanked the city workers for putting all the flags on the light poles today and they look beautiful going down Main Street. He also thanked Comm. Smith for having all the workers get our streets cleaned up for the Holiday.

Administrator-

The Administrator said that on May 9th we had the Secretary of State Mobile Unit here in city hall and was a big success again this year. He said we will be planning another one in the near future. He also advised that the PACE Bus Service is up and running and we are fine tuning this Service. He said

if anyone needs a ride to please call city hall at 458-2333, extension 202 and they will schedule your ride date and time.

City Clerk-

Nothing to Report

Engineer-

Todd Gereaux was absent.

City Attorney:

Atty. Kopman had nothing to report.

Reports By City Commissioners:

Accounts & Finances-

Comm. Hibler made a motion to pay the total bills due on our Check Register in the amount of $37,542.79, seconded by Comm. Smith. Motion approved with 4 ayes, 0 nays (Hibler, Smith, Hutton, & Mayor Vehrs) 1 absent (Tessler).

Comm. Hibler made a motion to approve the Payroll Expenses in the amount of $100,197.59, seconded by Comm. Hutton. Motion approved 4 ayes, 0 nays (Hibler, Hutton, Smith & Mayor Vehrs) 1 absent (Tessler).

Streets & Public Improvements-

Comm. Smith said that he’d been very busy after just losing his wife. Now that he’s back he’s going to give more attention to the city as they have a lot of work to do. The commissioner said he wants everyone to know one thing and one thing only with him, that he’s here for the taxpayer because it’s the taxpayers that pay our bills. He said that he has pretty much done everything he promised the taxpayers he would do, but it’s been a hard road and has to finish everything up. He also advised that there’s going to be a lot of construction going on in the next few months.

Public Property-

Comm. Hutton addressed the Rock Salt Bid on the Agenda. At 1:00 today there was a Bid Letting for Salt Purchase for the Water Treatment Plant. Out of (3) Bids, Midwest Salt was the low Bidder at $103.00 per ton, $3 cheaper than last year.

Comm. Hutton made a motion to award the Rock Salt Bid to Midwest Salt in the amount of $103.00 per ton, seconded by Comm. Hibler. Motion approved 4 ayes, 0 nays (Hutton, Hibler, Smith & Mayor Vehrs) 1 absent (Tessler).

Comm. Hutton then gave the Plant Crew Report followed by the Outside Crews Report; had 57 locates, 1 water repair, 7 meter repairs, 34 meter reads, 4 water shut offs and helped the Plant with the VacCon and helped with other things around town.

Public Health & Safety-

Comm. Tessler was absent. Comm. Tessler asked Chief Ficarello to give the numbers from 4/26-5/22 with total calls for service 241.

Planning & Zoning -

No Meeting.

Closed Session:

No request for Closed Session.

Old Business:

The Mayor had one thing to report on. Exelon Corporation had their Annual Fishing Derby a couple of weeks ago and all the proceeds went to Ronald McDonald House. The Fishing Derby raised over $55,000 even though there was a little rain in the forecast. The Mayor then asked if anyone has pop can tops to please save them, bring them into city hall and he’ll make sure that Ronald McDonald House gets them. This Derby is done very professionally and there were 70 boats that went into the water that day within an hour and ten minutes.

New Business:

The Mayor then brought up the Reed Custer High School Volleyball Teams request for a Tag Day on June 9th which wasn’t able to make the Agenda in time. The Mayor then asked the council how they felt about this. No comments by council. He also advised the Tag Day would be from 9am-1pm and the girls are raising funds to go to Notre Dame Volleyball Camp, hoping to defray the cost to each girl.

Comm. Hutton made a motion to approve the RCHS Volleyball Teams Tag Day on June 9th from 9am-1pm, seconded by Comm. Hibler. Motion approved with 4 ayes, 0 nays (Hutton, Hibler, Smith & Mayor Vehrs) 1 absent (Tessler). Mayor Vehrs then made their first donation.

Adjournment:

Comm. Hutton made motion to adjourn the Regular Meeting at 7:12 pm, seconded by Comm. Smith. Motion approved with 4 ayes, 0 nays (Hutton, Smith, Hibler & Mayor Vehrs) 1 absent (Tessler).
