Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) dedicated a piece of her district to longtime Coal City police chief.
Announcing that Route 113 from Carbon Hill Road to Virginia Street in Coal City will be known as the "Dennis M. Neary Memorial Highway" on May 31, Rezin passed SJR23, which honors the longtime officer.
“Neary was hired as a police officer in Coal City on Oct. 23, 1972 and went on to serve as chief of police in Coal City for 30 years,” Rezin said.
Neary also served 35 years with the Coal City Volunteer Fire Department, she said, adding that many of those years he served as a captain
“In 2002 he received the Coal City Community Service Award,” Rezin said.
She concluded noting Neary passed away in October 2016, leaving behind his wife of 43 years, Cathy, two sons and three grandchildren.
