City of Lockport issued the following announcement on May 2.
The City was recently awarded a $1,025,000 Grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) for Railway Crossing Safety Improvements. The grant will fund four improvement projects at three of the City’s railway crossings at no cost to the City.
IDOT recently notified the City that it was awarded funding from the Railway-Highway Crossings (Section 130) Program through the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act to make safety improvements through the installation of:
Signals and pedestrian gates on 13th Street at the Metra Station along the Canadian National (CN) Railway Tracks
Pedestrian crossing signals and gate system on 8th Street at the CN Railway Tracks
Pedestrian gates and warning system on W. 9th Street at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Railway Tracks
The City applied for the grant through the Will County Government League (WCGL) for Railroad Crossing Safety Improvements. The grant award is for State of Illinois Fiscal Year 2018, and the improvements are scheduled to be installed later this year. The FAST program funds are 90-10-0, 90 percent from federal funds, 10 percent from the railroad, and no funding is required from the local public agency.
The City allocated $150,000 in the 2019 Budget for any additional improvements to compliment grant funded projects in the 2019 Capital Improvement Plan. CN crossings at Division Street and 10th Street would be a priority.
