An inmate who had been taken to a Joliet hospital held a correctional officer and a hospital employee hostage for approximately one hour on June 7, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC).
The IDOC’s initial report said that the incident at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center began at approximately 3:35 a.m., when Joshua Matthews revealed a makeshift weapon and told the officer assigned to him and a certified nurse’s assistant that he was taking them hostage.
Joliet Police officers arrived on the scene at 3:55 a.m. and had the situation under control by 4:20 a.m., with the inmate secured, according to the report, which also said that no one had been injured.
The incident is under investigation and the IDOC said it will share the results with the Will County state’s attorney.
