Joliet historic preservation commissioners discuss potential landmarking

The city of Joliet Historic Preservation Commission Committee of the Whole met Feb. 22 to discuss potential landmarking.

February 22, 2017

The JOLIET HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION COMMITTEE-OF THE-WHOLE MEETING of the City of Joliet, Illinois was held on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at 6:15 p.m. in the Planning Conference Room, Joliet, Municipal Building, 150 W. Jefferson Street, Joliet, Illinois.

1. CALL TO ORDER

2. DECLARATION OF QUORUM

PRESENT: Quinn Adamowski, Gerri Eck, Michael Grady, Bill Habiger,

Candace Johnson, Sharon Merwin, Greg Peerbolte, Sara Stovall.

ABSENT: Paul Burden, John Chow, Kevin Heinemann.

There was acknowledgement of two residents in the audience. Mr. Charlie Sullivan, 500

N. Broadway Street, Joliet, Illinois and Ms. Christine Policandriotes, 1408 E.

Washington Street, Joliet, Illinois.

3. COMMENTS FROM THE PUBLIC & STAFF

Mr. Schwarz made several announcements and reminders for upcoming events

(Plainfield Historic Preservation workshop, CAMP training workshop, Board and

Commission training session at City Hall).

Commissioner Merwin made several announcements regarding upcoming events

(quarterly meeting Landmarks Illinois) and distributed information regarding a

project Ms. Rebecca Hunter, Elgin Historic Preservation Commission, worked on

regarding catalog homes in the area.

4. APPROVAL OF MEETING MINUTES

There are no meeting minutes to approve.

5. PUBLIC AWARENESS COMMITTEE DISCUSSION

a. Creation of a PowerPoint presentation for neighborhood groups and others

Commissioner Merwin made a suggestion to develop a PowerPoint

presentation for the purpose of educating the public about Historic

Preservation. Commission Merwin will draft a presentation and make

available to other Commissioners and Mr. Schwarz from review.

6. NOMINATION COMMITTEE DISCUSSION

a. Discussion of Potential Local Landmarking of the Dr. William Dougall home

at 209 South Union Street

Motion to remove Potential Local Landmarking of the Dr. William Dougall home at 209

South Union Street from agenda until further notice was made by Sharon Merwin.

Motion seconded by Sara Stovall.

Motion carried by the following vote:

AYES: Quinn Adamowski, Gerri Eck, Michael Grady, Bill Habiger, Candace

Johnson, Sharon Merwin, Greg Peerbolt, Sara Stovall.

NAYS: None.

b. Loyola University National Register Nomination for Joliet Correctional

Center

It was discussed that a professor at Loyola University is guiding his students

to study the feasibility of nominating the Joliet Correctional Center to the

National Register of Historic Places.

7. DISTRICT COMMITTEE DISCUSSION

There was no discussion.

8. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS

There were no comments.

9. ADJOURNMENT

Motion to adjourn was made by Michael Grady.

Motion seconded by Quinn Adamowski.

Motion carried by the following vote:

AYES: Quinn Adamowski, Gerri Eck, Michael Grady, Bill Habiger, Candace

Johnson, Sharon Merwin, Greg Peerbolte, Sara Stovall.

NAYS: None.
