Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker has expressed his intention to endorse a bill, known as HB 3768, which was successfully passed by the legislature on May 19. The groundbreaking law bill will mark a significant step toward greater inclusivity and recognition for the community.

Pritzker expressed his support when the bill was introduced, and took to Twitter to affirm his commitment.

"My office made this change years ago, and I look forward to signing this bill into law to ensure a more equitable Illinois," Pritzker tweeted, ABC7 Chicago quoted him as saying.

CBS News Chicago said Illinois would be the first state to officially recognize Arab Americans as an ethnic group when collecting public data.

According to ABC7 Chicago, Pritzker said his office had already implemented this change years ago.

The bill was sponsored by State Rep. Abdelnasser Rashid, the first Palestinian American elected to the state legislature.

For a considerable time, community leaders in Illinois have acknowledged the importance of obtaining precise information about the Arab American population. The introduction of this recent legislation has instilled optimism among these leaders, as it is expected to provide a more accurate representation of the Arab American count in the state. By having access to reliable data, they will be empowered to effectively address the unique needs and concerns of their community, guaranteeing the provision of appropriate resources and support.

In Illinois, including Arab Americans as a selectable ethnic category on registration forms marks a momentous achievement. This action speaks volumes about the state's dedication to inclusivity, respect, and equitable representation. By officially recognizing Arab Americans as a unique ethnic group, Illinois demonstrates its commitment to embracing diversity and cultivating a sense of belonging among its entire population.

Governor Pritzker's support for this bill and his determination to sign it into law exemplify his administration's dedication to creating a more equitable Illinois. With the implementation of this legislation, Arab Americans in the state will gain a voice and representation that will enable them to contribute more effectively to Illinois's social, cultural, and political fabric.
